We have made three exchanges through Intervac this year; San Francisco later this month, Scotland in July and southeast England in August. Plus, we unfortunately had to turn down many more offers! Our home-exchange was in Holland this time. We got to know very warm-hearted people. Membership has become a habit you can not resist although we have been quite passive ourselves. Finland seems to interest members in other countries.

Without home exchange, there is no way that we could have afforded to take our family of five for five and a half week vacation in Canada. With home exchange it was just a touch more expensive as three weeks near a beach in Southern Europe.

Our family (2 adults and 2 children age 2 and 3) had a marvelous home-exchange vacation with a Swiss family last summer. We were staying near Zürich in a village called Bucks. We hiked, swam in outdoor swimming pools, visited mountains, the top of Säntis, centre of Zürick etc. I warmly recommend home-exchange to everybody.

Nous avions deux vieux rêves : aller à New York et échanger notre maison. Grâce à Intervac, nous avons pu combiner les deux !

Quand on a 3 enfants, aller à New York sans un budget illimité, soit on y va un week-end soit on échange sa maison.

Notre fille ainée est née un 4 Juillet, nous lui avions promis qu’un jour, on fêterait son anniversaire aux USA…elle allait avoir 24 ans, terminer ses études, elle nous a dit : « c’est cette année ou jamais ! » On s’est bougés !

Nous nous sommes embarqués dans l’aventure d’un échange de maisons en souvenir d’une famille connue il y a une quinzaine d’années , qui faisait déjà ça avec leur 4 enfants , sans internet, à l’aide du catalogue et par l’intermédiaire d’Intervac, nous nous souvenions de ce nom…

J’ai tapé Intervac sur internet et je me suis baladée sur le site. Les maisons, les professions, les descriptifs, les tarifs, tout me paraissait simple, abordable, rassurant. Moi, qui suis d’un naturel méfiant, j’ai été tout de suite emballée ! Mon mari m’a donné carte blanche, nous nous sommes inscrits et j’ai envoyé 35 mails à des offres correspondants à notre demande.

Et là, miracle : une maison prés de New York, des dates qui correspondaient, un interlocuteur très intéressé, mes enfants n’y croyaient pas ! Comment notre petite maison à Soulac sur mer pouvait rivaliser avec une grande maison à une demi-heure de Manhattan ? Parce qu’elle avait pour les américains d’autres atouts : à deux pas de la plage, une maison typique dans un village classé….c’est la magie d’Intervac : on n’échange pas la même maison, chacun y trouve un charme différent.

Nous sommes rapidement tombés d’accord sur les dates, les principales modalités de l’échange.

Nous avons échangé des mails, en anglais (dur, dur !) pendant 4 mois, surtout pour bien se mettre d’accord sur les détails de l’échange (le linge, les produits d’entretien, l’entretien du jardin, de la piscine, des plantes, le courrier, le téléphone, le répondeur, le frigo….) Au fur et à mesure, des points d’accord, je remplissais un tableau que nous avons conjointement signé lors de notre rencontre, ainsi que le contrat pour la voiture.

Nous avons eu la chance de nous voir puisque nos américains sont arrivés le dimanche chez nous et nous sommes partis le mardi matin. C’était très bien de mettre un visage sur les noms et de les imaginer chez nous ou quand nous étions chez eux.

Arrivés à New York, nous avions une petite appréhension …Bien sûr, nous avions vu des photos de la maison (magnifique avec une piscine) mais elle pouvait être dans un quartier moyen, moyen dans une banlieue pas très fréquentable.

Et là, on descend du taxi et on se pince pour y croire ! Mais non, on ne rêve pas, c’est bien là ! Un décor de cinéma, on s’attend à voir des acteurs sortir des décors, la piscine est bien réelle, la maison est bien plus grande que sur les photos, on en a les clés, on est chez nous pour deux semaines, on est les rois du monde !

C’ést notre premier échange et c’est un sentiment bizarre, inconnu…on est comme chez nous puisque tout seul, on n’est pas invités, il va falloir se débrouiller pour se faire à manger, laver notre linge, prendre le train….et à la fois, on est chez les autres, c’est une maison qui vit avec des photos, des livres, des placards pleins…

Nos hôtes nous ont laissé quelques plans, quel ques post-it. Il va falloir s’entraider tous pour vivre le mieux possible ce séjour.

Et on y est très bien arrivés ! on est partis à la découverte du village, on a goûté leur nourriture, mon mari a un peu « galéré » pour faire fonctionner le barbecue et la voiture , on s’est adaptés, on a été invités par des amis à eux ( c’était une super soirée, on a appris beaucoup de choses ce soir là…),on a assisté à des fêtes du village. Il faut sortir au maximum pour s’imprégner de leur vie et en même temps rentrer à la maison comme si on rentrait chez nous pour retrouver le calme, une soirée télé, un repas au bord de la piscine en maillot de bain , ce qu’on ferait pas à l’hôtel !

C’est la liberté de ce système ! Faire ce qu’on veut quand on veut, aller au restaurant, recevoir des invités, personne ne vous contrôle, dormir jusqu’à 3 heures de l’après midi…

Nous étions à une demi heure en train de New York donc nous pouvions y aller à notre rythme sans nous lasser ni nous fatiguer. Nous avons vu tout ce que nous voulions voir à NY, les clichés comme le reste ! Nous avons aussi vu la vie d’un village dans le New Jersey et notre vision des américains a changé.

C’est une chance d’avoir vécu cet échange aussi bien sans mauvaises surprises, sans désagréments avec chez nous, des américains ravis de leur séjour aussi, laissant derrière eux juste une télé allumée, des volets ouverts et une voiture sale ! Ils avaient deux jeunes enfants donc moins de personnel actif pour le ménage !

Même si cet échange a demandé un peu (beaucoup !) de travail : mails en anglais, contrats à rédiger, classeur de consignes, informations touristiques, ménage à fond, rangement, travaux de remise en état… nous ne regrettons rien et nous sommes prêts à repartir, moins loin, moins longtemps (c’est quand même un budget !). Le principe est génial, enrichissant même si la prochaine fois, nous ne proposerons pas nos deux maisons (principale et secondaire) dans l’échange, c’était la seule erreur commise ! Normal, on débutait !
